SUMMARY:Between Order and Chaos: André Kertész and M.C. Escher in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:A scholarly conversation about the lives and work of M.C. Escher and André Kertész for our exhibition Between Order and Chaos.\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening conversation exploring the work of M. C. Escher and André Kertész\, presented in conjunction with the gallery’s current exhibition Between Order and Chaos\, running through March 21. The discussion will feature scholars Dena Woodall and Robert Gurbo\, examining how each artist challenged conventional ways of seeing through structure\, perception\, and visual paradox. \nA reception will begin at 6:00 pm\, followed by the moderated discussion at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\nDena M. Woodall has been Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston since 2008\, overseeing their broad collection spanning 12th to 21st centuries of works from around the world. Her most recent exhibition and catalogue\, Picturing Nature: The Stuart Collection of 18th and 19th Century British Landscapes and Beyond (2025)\, spotlighted a collection she built over the last decade within the MFAH\, in collaboration with a Houston patron. Her 2026 publication\, Virtual Realities: The Art of M.C. Escher from the Michael S. Sachs Collection\, is based on the 2022 exhibition of the same title. This exhibition of over 400 objects including prints\, drawings\, watercolors\, printed fabrics\, and constructed objects\, constituted the most comprehensive exhibition of works by M.C. Escher ever held. Dena is a member of Print Council of America and was recently elected Director-at-Large of the Association of Print Scholars. \n\n\n\n\nRobert Gurbo is President of the André and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation and the Estate of André Kertész. He worked closely with Kertész during the final years of the artist’s life and has devoted fifty years to the study and stewardship of his work. Robert is co-author of the catalogue for the National Gallery of Art’s 2005 exhibition André Kertész and editor or author of several key publications\, including André Kertész: The Early Years and André Kertész: The Polaroids. Since 1987\, as curator of the estate\, he has organized numerous exhibitions and collaborated extensively with museums and institutions worldwide. \n
