SUMMARY:A View of One's Own: Landscapes by British Women Artists\, 1760-1860
DESCRIPTION:A View of One’s Own showcases landscape drawings and watercolours by British women artists working between 1760 and 1860\, whose work represents a growing area of The Courtauld’s collection. These artists range from highly accomplished amateurs to those ambitious for more formal recognition. They have remained mostly unknown\, and their works largely unpublished. \nWhen the Royal Academy was founded in 1760\, its members included two women\, yet there would not be another female academician until Dame Laura Knight was elected in 1936. Despite this institutional exclusion\, women artists in Britain continued to train\, practice\, and exhibit during this period\, particularly in the field of landscape watercolours. \nThis exhibition and its accompanying catalogue shed new light on these artists\, working within a heavily male dominated era in the arts. Some of the artists achieved recognition during their lifetimes\, while others’ work remained private\, until later discovered. \n10 artists are featured in the exhibition. They include Harriet Lister and Lady Mary Lowther\, who were among the first to depict the Lake District; Amelia Long\, Lady Farnborough\, one of the first British artists to travel to France following the Napoleonic Wars; and Elizabeth Batty – whose works appearing in the show were only rediscovered a few years ago. \n \nImage: Fanny Blake (1804-1879)\, A rainbow over Patterdale Churchyard\, Cumbria\, 1849\, Watercolour and opaque watercolour over graphite\, with scratching out\, on wove paper. SUMMARY:Henri Michaux: Mescaline Drawings
DESCRIPTION:This display celebrates the unique Mescaline Drawings by the Franco-Belgian poet and visual artist\, Henri Michaux (1899 -1984).   \nIn January 1955\, as part of an experiment prompted by his publisher\, Michaux tried the psychedelic drug mescaline\, a product derived from the Mexican peyote cactus. The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effect of this type of non-addictive drug on the creative act. Michaux considered these experiences to be a portal into the inner workings of the mind.   \nThe investigation transformed Michaux’s artistic life and provoked an outpouring of writings and distinctive drawings during the 1950s and 1960s\, the latter being at the centre of this exhibition. Created after the effects of mescaline (and at times other drugs such as hashish\, LSD\, and psilocybin) had passed\, the drawings are the astonishing transcriptions of the artist’s sensation\, rendered as if by a sort of shuddering seismograph.  \nThis display\, which presents works rarely seen in the UK\, will showcase Michaux’s extraordinary experience\, one that pushed the limits of what the essence of drawing is. \n \nImage: Henri Michaux (1899-1984)\, Untitled (Mescaline drawing)(detail)\, 1957\, pen and black ink on paper. SUMMARY:Drawn to Blue: Artists' use of blue paper
DESCRIPTION:This display will present a selection of drawings on blue paper from The Courtauld’s collection\, ranging from works by the Venetian Renaissance artist Jacopo Tintoretto to a watercolor by famed English Artist Joseph Mallord William Turner. \nMade from fibers derived from blue rags\, blue paper first appeared in Northern Italy in the 14th century. It became a popular drawing support for artists\, and its use spread across Western Europe by the late 16th century; it was widely used in England and France in the 18th century. Blue paper provided a nuanced mid-tone which allowed the creation of strong light and dark contrasts\, an effect much sought after by draughtsmen. \nThis exhibition project brought together a team of curators and paper conservators at The Courtauld and the J. Paul Getty Museum to explore the technical aspects and artistic richness of the use of blue paper.   \nThe programme of displays in the Gilbert and Ildiko Butler Drawings Gallery is generously supported by the International Music and Art Foundation\, with additional support from James Bartos.  \n \nImage: Jonathan Richardson\, the elder (1665 – 1745)\, Self-portrait\, The Courtauld\, London (Samuel Courtauld Trust)
