SUMMARY:DRAWINGS WEEK 2026 - Winslow Homer at Cooper Hewitt
DESCRIPTION:Throughout his career\, American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910) relied on drawings to process the world around him and as foundations for his most celebrated compositions. Though best known as an oil painter\, watercolorist\, and etcher\, Homer relied on drawing to absorb and sort key details of his environs and to experiment with composition. In this presentation\, Dr. Diana Greenwold\, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs and Lunder Curator of American Art at the National Museum of Asian Art\, Smithsonian will explore the Cooper Hewitt’s rich collection of Homer’s works on paper as a unique means to chart this artist’s fascinating artistic evolution.   \n__ \nThis DRAWINGS WEEK 2026 event is organized by The Drawing Foundation in partnership with Cooper Hewitt and in association with Master Drawings New York 2026. \n                                \nImage: Winslow Homer (1836–1910)\, Tree Roots on a Hillside\, Prout’s Neck (detail)\, 1884. SUMMARY:The Stradanus Project
DESCRIPTION:Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum holds 143 sheets of drawings and inscriptions from the sketchbooks of the Netherlandish artist Johannes Stradanus\, also known as Jan van der Straet (1523–1605). As one of the head artists at the Medici court in Florence\, Stradanus worked as a painter and designer. He was also a prolific printmaker; his engravings\, which cover a broad range of subjects—from religious narratives to animal hunts—circulated widely across Europe as well as Asia and the Americas. \nBeginning in 2021\, Cooper Hewitt embarked on a project to conserve\, research\, and digitize Stradanus’s drawings\, which served as preparatory designs for his engravings. At some point in their history\, the drawings were bound together to form several sketchbooks that were later disassembled. The leaves were separated and cut apart\, and the sheets were laid down on secondary and tertiary supports—perhaps as part of an album that was then again cut apart before the sheets were acquired by Cooper Hewitt. As a result of conservation treatment and research\, drawings and inscriptions that have been obscured for more than a century have been newly revealed. \nThe Stradanus Project is ongoing\, and this website will be updated with newly published research and images as they are available. Please continue to check back for new information about the drawings and inscriptions\, as well as updates on the symposium\, Stradanus at Cooper Hewitt\, which will take place on November 6–7\, 2025\, at Cooper Hewitt. \n \nThe Stradanus Project is made possible with support from Getty through The Paper Project initiative; and received Federal support from the Smithsonian Collections Care Initiative\, administered by the National Collections Program.

SUMMARY:Inspired by China: Chinoiserie and Export Drawings
DESCRIPTION:China has long been a source of inspiration and fascination for European artists. In this study session\, we will take a close look at Cooper Hewitt’s holdings of chinoiserie and export drawings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries\, with a focus on works by Jean-Baptiste Pillement and George Chinnery.  Pillement’s playful drawings of architecture\, flora\, and figures highlight the fantastic and romantic visions of China that populated the European imagination.  In contrast to these fanciful representations\, Chinnery’s sketchbook drawings—made during the artist’s travels to Macau—capture scenes and figures from daily life.  In addition to these works\, we will explore chinoiserie drawings and designs by various European artists\, as well as examples of Chinese export gouaches. \nThis study session will be led by Jamie Kwan\, Assistant Curator of Drawings\, Prints & Graphic Design\, Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum \nThis event is organized by The Drawing Foundation in partnership with Cooper Hewitt\, and in association with Master Drawings New York 2025. \n  \n                \nImage: Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808)\, Flowering Branches (detail)\, 1775-1800\, Chalk on white laid paper.
