On July 19 in Spencertown, NY, collector Jack Shear will be joined by Curator Jennifer Tonkovich of the Morgan Library & Museum for an informal conversation about his eclectic taste and unorthodox installations, his boundless appreciation for the act of drawing, and ways of seeing through drawings. This conversation and exhibition aim to challenge conventional approaches to the how, why, and what of collecting drawings.
The Jack Shear Collection includes over 1800 drawings from the 15th-21st centuries. Jack Shear is an artist and collector who lives and works in Columbia County, New York. His drawings collection has been the subject of multiple exhibitions including, Drawn: From the Collection of Jack Shear, Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX, 2021; Ways of Seeing, Three Takes on the Jack Shear Drawing Collection, The Drawing Center, New York, 2021-2022; and Infinity on Paper: Drawings from the Collections of the Benton Museum of Art and Jack Shear, Benton Museum of Art, Pomona College, 2024. Shear’s collection was also the focus of the 2023 AllPaper Seminar at the Benton Museum of Art, Pomona College.
